From http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/dshstoday/bogusemail.shtm

Bogus food stamps/gasoline e-mail

An e-mail is being circulated that indicates that food stamps and free gasoline for Hurricane Katrina evacuees are available from or through the "Texas Department of Health and Human Services."

The e-mail is bogus.

However, hurricane evacuees wanting accurate information about food stamps availability may call the 2-1-1 information service or 1-888-312-4567.

Some versions of the e-mail include the Web address for the former Texas Department of Health, now part of the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The food stamps program is administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

Neither agency is supplying free gasoline.

See what I get for not doing my homework.

I received the following from the Houston Museum on Natural Science

After being forced from their homes as victims of nature, this is an opportunity for evacuees to take their minds off the weather and enjoy the better side of nature at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.  The Museum is offering free admission to the Museum's nine permanent exhibit halls that include dinosaurs, Africa, Hall of the Americas, precious gems and minerals, the newly renovated Wiess Energy Hall and more.  Show a Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama drivers' license at the box office, directly inside the main entrance of the museum, to take advantage of this offer. For more information on tickets, call (713) 639-4629.

From The Association of Former Students

The Aggie Network's Katrina Support Efforts

Fellow Aggies,

The effects of Hurricane Katrina have left catastrophic damage in its wake for countless families - including a number of Aggies - to contend with for a long time to come. I'm sure you are as concerned as I am for the safety and well-being of our fellow Aggies, their families and friends who have been impacted by this devastating hurricane.

In an effort to aid fellow Aggies, The Association of Former Students has developed an online forum at www.AggieNetwork.com/KatrinaSupport where Katrina victims can post their needs and notify the Aggie Network of their situation. In addition, Aggies who want to volunteer their resources are able to reply directly to the individuals in need. With the help of over 400,000 members of the Aggie Network, we can be a very powerful resource, and I would urge Aggies everywhere, particularly those in the southern United States, to remain constantly aware of other Aggies' impending needs.

The Association has also established a call center in the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center to answer any questions you may have about these or university resources. If you would like assistance in posting a need online or finding resources in your area, please give us a call on our special toll-free line at
1-888-440-7345.

In addition, there are more than 200 A&M Clubs around the world that connect Aggies with one another and with the available resources in their community. To ask about or participate in A&M Club relief efforts, please contact your local A&M Club by visiting www.AggieNetwork.com/Clubs or calling our special toll-free number above.

The effects of Hurricane Katrina have also affected many Texas A&M students, and The Association is working with Texas A&M University to provide assistance and support for these students and their families.

While The Association of Former Students is able to connect Aggies and potential resources, we are not attempting to replace the admirable work of the charitable organizations that provide money, clothing and food. If you would like to make a monetary donation, we encourage you to contact organizations such as the Red Cross or others that are listed below, where your contributions can be best maximized.

On behalf of The Association of Former Students, thank you for keeping our fellow Aggies in your thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time.

In the Aggie Spirit,

Porter S. Garner III '79

If you are a Katrina victim, and are somewhere safe, log your details here.

If you're trying to find people, go here.

The people who have been moved into Houston's Astrodome are supposed to have internet access.  T-Mobile has also opened up hotspots for free access.

From the Houston A&M Club:

Dear fellow Aggies,

The effects of Hurricane Katrina have left catastrophic damage in its wake for countless families - including a number of Aggies - to contend with for a long time to come. I’m sure you are as concerned as we are for the safety and well-being of our fellow Aggies, their families and friends who have been impacted by this devastating hurricane.

Houston Aggie volunteers are needed immediately and you can find out the details on the website, or by clicking here.  Websites and phone numbers are listed below for your reference.

The Houston A&M Club, the Reveille Club of Houston and the Howdy Club are working together to coordinate volunteer efforts here in Houston.  On Thursday, September 15, 2005, we will have a fundraising event and these details will be on the website at www.houstonags.org as soon as possible.

We are posting as much information as possible on the Houston A&M Club’s website about donations, volunteering, fundraisers and communications.  We do recommend that donations are made directly to organizations currently set up and prepared for this cause, such as the Red Cross, the SPCA, etc.  Links are found below and on our website.

One of the best Aggie resources developed is available on The Association of Former Students’ website at www.AggieNetwork.com/KatrinaSupport where Katrina victims can post their needs and notify the Aggie network of their situation.  You can also call toll free 1-888-440-7345.

On behalf of the Houston A&M Club, thank you for keeping our fellow Aggies, families and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time.  Please share this information with your friends and family.

In the Aggie Spirit,

Marlies Whitmoyer ’94

KTBZ The Buzz in Houston is doing something really neat.  The main DJ on the morning show (Rod Ryan) moved from New Orleans to Houston 18 months ago after having lived there for eight years.  He and his staff have completely put their lives on hold, and have taken over the entire station, with a twist.  They are taking requests for a donation to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.  The interesting thing is that they will play anything.  It started with a price schedule of $30 for a song they would normally play, $60 for a rock song that was out of the new rock format, and $80 for everything else.  I've heard some interesting stuff (Neil Diamond for example.)  Last total I heard was $175k donated.  Now think about this, they've been at the radio station for going on 36-hours straight.  IF you want to donate through them, just call 713-212-ktbz.  Or else Yahoo has a donation page up.
